Davey, do you have any idea how hypocritical you sound saying "Change the country, not the candidate," all in the context of your passionate desire to change Pete Buttigieg? If you think Pete's presentation is performative, that tells me that you have spent zero time in the Midwest and have no friends from the Midwest -- correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd bet money on it. I grew up in Ohio, not too far from Pete in Indiana, and I guarantee that Buttigieg is a 100% authentic non-effeminate, introverted gay Midwesterner, just like me. I now live in San Francisco, and have several friends (both gay and straight) who, like me, grew up in the Midwest and moved to the Bay Area decades ago, and we're all still identifiably Midwesterners in many of our values and habits; we don't even dress like Californians. So why can't you just celebrate our diversity instead of imposing some theoretical template on a person was has nothing to do with it?
